Ok, if you haven’t guessed by the title; this is going to be a HowTo for Jaseeq/Maseequms (which is it’s new name, cause Mod has been on this lolcat kick lately and is now adding Ma and Ums to every freaking word).
**Note** WebSeek is coming soon… but the working process is virtually the same as JaSeeq so I’m not writing a new HowTo, I’ll just update this one as it goes.
STEPS:
1.) Download Maseequms/Jaseeq(which is what I still call it cause it doesn’t sound so lolcatish) from the internets. You can find it thru google, or via modsyn’s link in my blogroll, or just click here: Gimme them musics
2.) Install the program….. oh wait it doesn’t install. *A lot of confusion is caused by the the .jar* Let me explain for those that don’t get it..(Mac/Vista users I’m looking at you..sorry had to throw in that cheap shot, i am writing from a mac and I own a PC, so don’t get all flame happy, i just noticed that most of the confusion-related comments on mod’s page were from mac and vista users, so…). The .jar IS the program, there is NO install, that’s because it’s platform independent. Any OS with Java 5 or higher should work, he would really like to go 6, but the Mac has no stable 6 builds yet.
Where was I??????? Recap: Download, Install(and by install i mean put the .jar where ever you like)
*I put the .jar in a folder named Jaseeq, on my desktops(both the mac at work, and my home pc) to keep things organized
3.) Using Jaseeq: double click the .jar. Two windows will pop-up. With the smaller of the two in focus. Type in a search term. It can be anything you desire. A hint tho… the more detailed the less results. Example: *Holy* will return a lot more results than *Holy Diver* *Don’t use *’s* So if you want a broad search, be less specific.
4.) Once you have entered your search term press *Enter* or *Return* and the small window will disappear and a progress bar will appear in the larger window. Lots of things are going on during this process, so be patient, but if it happens to get stuck at a certain percentage, say 89 or 99%, for more than about 10 seconds, then you can press *ctrl-B* and it will cancel the search at it’s current position and give you the results thus far.
5.) Alright my results are here(in my best meatwad)! So now you’ve got results, and they are arranged in tabs. Location Title Artist Album Bitrate Length ID And you can click on any of the tabs to sort the columns. And you can click/drag the divider sections between the tabs to increase or decrease the size of the tabs.
6.) Intricate workings: Single click to highlight. Double click to play/preview. Single click then right click for Queue, Download, or Info
*When you download, by default the song/songs will save in *Music* directory in the local path. If you do not have a music dir, it will make one for you. This can be changed in the *Settings* menu, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
7.) When you begin a download, the right pane will increase, and a title and progress bar will appear, when downloads are complete feel free to use the little arrows to left or right justify the panes again. You can highlight/download multiple songs using a *shift-click*
8.) Everything can be accessed via the File Edit or Help menus, or thru various keyboard shortcuts. Here are some of the basics
*ctrl-f* Find/Search for new music **I know all you mac people are used to applekey-*blah* but get over it**
*ctrl-d* Download selected songs
*ctrl-r* Download all
*ctrl-a* Select all
*ctrl-g* Settings Menu
*alt-x* Exit
9.) The Settings Menu
- Search Results
- Save Location
- Justification Arrows
- Settings Menu
- Main Search
- Howto Subsearch2
*ctrl-g* or Edit/Settings will get you to the settings menu. Most of these options are UAYOR or *Use at your own risk*, but we’ll run thru them anyway.
Checkbox Use older JaSeeq Search – what this does is not search using the new features.(i.e. bitrate filtration, among others but that’s the main one) Upside-Faster Downside-links aren’t guaranteed to work. **Special note** Mod just told me this feature will be taken out of the new release, cause it doesn’t work.
Dropdown Number of download threads – this is the number of chunks your file will be broken into to download(like dta) the more chunks, generally the faster it goes, but I have had problems with using over 4 chunks, like I was trying 7, and it kept hanging on 99%. So i keep mine at 4.
Textinput/Browsebox Music Directory – Mainly for Vista users to manually change the save path.
Textinput Days to keep in cache Button Clear cache – If you perform a search, Jaseeq will cache the search. Not cache the files mind you, but cache the search results, so that if you need to search for the same thing an hour/day later, it will return results instantly. Clear the cache to force a new set of search results.
Checkbox/Textinput Proxy Host/Port – for use with a proxy. If you don’t know what this does, don’t worry about it, you don’t need it.
10.) CHECKBOX Copy songs to iPod after downloading************* This is is the last Settings Menu Item, but is also worth getting it’s own Step#. Explanation: When enabled, this will “theoretically” add the songs you download to your iPod. BUT there are certain conditions, which i’ll let Mod explain…
And there you have it JaSeeq. Enjoy!!!!!!
HowTo brought to you by WraithLord,Modsyn,Nathan Scott Phillips, the letter K, and the number Hey how you do’n! *No Magical Space Bunnies were grount up and placed in mason jars for the making of this HowTo*
*** Additions to the HowTo ***
I thought about making added steps, but 10 is a good amount of steps so I’ll keep it there. Besides, anything added here will not be necessary to JaSeeq’s functionality, they will just be afterthoughts/requests by users.
i.) Subsearching: something i asked for like a year ago, but he probably doesn’t remember that, but it went something like this… W:Hey can you make it search the search results to find specific things, like ctrl-f does in ff? …. M:Yeah, no that’s not gonna happen, do you know how hard that would be? …. W:Huh, no. Now let’s just get in there and you do it! (btw, that’s how most of our conversations end)…….. Skip ahead a year. M:Hey you wanna see something neat? …. W:Well you know I do. ….M:Look now you can search the search results!! … W:Wow that’s amazing, I’d probably use that all the time if I knew how to type….
Sorry, I went off topic there for a bit. How to use the subsearch
Do a search; for example purposes let’s use Yoko Kanno (let it search and finish caching, it should find about 174 items)
Now say you only want things from cowboy bepop. hit *ctrl-f* again, and you will see your original search is still in the text box. **Don’t erase it** Click at the end, or press the right arrow key to goto end of line and unhighlight. Now press spacebar once. and type “album: bebop” w/o quotes of course. That’s album – colon – 1 space – and your subsearch term. Notice total files went from 174 to 43 Now it’s not perfect, but it will help you narrow down the search. It should work with *album:* *artist:* and/or *title:*
To go back to the original search list, just *ctrl-f* again, your original search term should be highlighted, press enter.
***Note*** If you play a song, and let it buffer to 100%; it does in fact cache the song…. There you happy!
That’s all to date, thanks for reading.
9-18-08 UPDATE FOR VISTA USERS
It has come to my attention that Vista, in all it’s infinite wisdom, marks any folder starting with a .(period) as read only. Now when running Jaseeq/Maseequms for the first time, it will look for(and if it’s not there create) a .jaseeq folder in the folder from which it’s ran(not quite true, it’s in the primary User’s folder, but that’s where i run mine from so..). Why? Well this was done really so mac users will not be subjected to anything they are not familiar with,.. i.e. behind the scenes programing… Everything “Just Works” right?!? For windows users(so they won’t be confused) placing a .(period) in front of a file/folder name on a Mac automagically hides it! So if you’ve got any buddies with Macs and want to mess with them a little, just start randomly renaming things with periods at the beginning(you’ll have to use the terminal if I’m not mistaken)… Anyway I’m going off topic…. For whatever crazy reason, Vista now marks folders and their subsequent files as READ ONLY. What this does, is creates a never ending loop of no saved Config Files, the program will still work, it will just act as if it’s the 1st time you have run it every single time… you run it.
*How To Fix*
1.)Find the Folder named .jaseeq
2.)Right click on it
3.)Go to Properties
4.)Uncheck/box READ ONLY, and Yes to carry attributes to all subfolders
5.)Click Apply/Ok
Now you should only see the Settings menu popup the very next time you run the jar, from now on it should save the configs properly.
Sorry for the delay In updating this, I just brought it to Mod’s attention today, and he’s crazy busy here at work, so don’t expect a fix soon….
Enjoy!
